Piston Broke !

December 23, 2006

Whilst I had the engine out I happened to meet the guy who built it originally many many years ago and asked him if he would check over the head as i had detected some play in the valve guides. I took off the cylinder head and was horrified to see a small piece of piston missing on N02. These were Cosworth pistons and I thought they were indestructable.

I have a Mk1 Escort Mexico which is prepared for historic rallying. It is of 1972 vintage and is remarkable condition for its age ( battle scars ignored). It has been a rally car most of it’s life , proof of which are the RAC advertising permits stuck to the dash which date back to 1980.The vinyl roof is also a dead give away of the car being inverted at some time. When not rallying I sell Private Number Plates. After the last rally I removed the engine to fit a new paddle clutch as it had been slipping , also I bought a new Pace alloy dry sump pan to replace the tin item which I had believed to be the culprit for the contamination on the clutch.
